NAUTICA

Living in coastal New England, and especially here in the Ocean State (RI), the sea, and all the images, tall tales, and mysteries associated with the sea, are ever present. For the New England artist, nautical images are easy to find, but hard to present in a way that hasn't been seen hundreds of times before. After all, how many different ways can you make a picture of a boat? This portfolio presents a few of my efforts at going a bit beyond the usual.

As with much of my work, I emphasize color and spend a lot of work creating a composition that works (at least for me). Yes, the colors in many of thes pictures are a bit beyond our everyday experience, but they are, for the most part, natural colors; colors that are present in the real world but need special processing to reveal them to our limited visual processes.

It's also true that I'm not opposed to significant distortions and other compositional adjustments to render a natural scene in a more pleasing way. My aim is for these alterations to be subtle, so that one perceives the composition, not the manipulation. This is nautical New England as I see it.
