PHOTOMOSAICS

My photomosaic pictures result from a conscious effort to do what we all do naturally – to assemble an array of separate and fleeting views into a coherent impression of the world about us, to capture the gestalt – the whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

I create photomosaics in an effort to present more spatial and temporal ambiance than can be seen in a traditional photograph. At the same time care is taken so that the image does not become so abstract and interpreted that the original scene is lost.

My assembly techniques vary. Some pictures are very nearly single point perspective Others are orthographic projections that result from photocopier-like linear scans of a scene. There are object-centered pictures in which the component images are captured as the camera revolves around an object. And there are pictures that are assembled from image components that are significantly stretched, mirrored, duplicated and distorted.

Each photomosaic is the result of significant walk-about-the-scene planning, acquisition of individual images and image assembly. But for me, the most successful pictures are the ones where that creative time and effort are least apparent. In a great picture awareness of the hand of the artist disappears, and the viewer is left with an impression of actively experiencing the scene.
